A recent report is showing concerning numbers as job seekers answers questions about unbiased recruitment and if they have experienced discrimination in a recruitment process. During the spring of 2019, the Swedish recruitment and staffing agency TNG surveyed over 1500 job seekers for their yearly candidate report. The results are reflecting a frustrated group of candidates who believe they have been rejected because of discrimination.

 

Unbiased recruitment continues to rise in popularity

In this year’s TNG Talent Insights 2019 report, the numbers show that the majority of candidates are becoming more positive towards unbiased recruitment and would prefer to strive away from the traditional process as much as possible. Meaning they prefer job applications that won’t accept pictures or questions regarding age, gender, or religion.

“58% say they have been rejected based on age”

The report highlights the most common reason job seekers believe they have experienced recruitment-related discrimination. So, when looking at the 1500 candidates, 58% believe they have been rejected because of their age. And when analyzing the different age groups more closely, 70% of candidates between 46-55 years say they have experienced rejection because of their age. Furthermore, 87% of job seekers between 56-64 have experienced age discrimination. These numbers are showing a harsh reality for older job seekers and

The six most common reasons why a job seeker experiences discrimination during recruitment:

  1. Age (58%)
  2. Appearance (14%)
  3. Gender or transgender identity (13%)
  4. Ethnic heritage (12%)
  5. Disability* (5%)
  6. Sexual orientation  (1%)

*Physical, neuropsychiatric, or intellectual (temporary or permanent)
